Workflow Boards Glossary

Learn the common words used across Workflow Boards.

These terms describe how work is organized in Workflow Boards. Keep the language simple and consistent so users understand the same object in the same way.

Key terms

Area
A project-level grouping such as product area, team area, module, or business function.
Assignee
The main person responsible for a task.
Additional Assignee
One or more people who are also helping with the task.
Board Query
The rule that decides which tasks are visible on a board.
Child Task
A lower-level task connected to a parent task.
Column
A board lane that usually represents a task status.
Executable Task
A task type that represents work a team can directly perform, such as story, bug, or task.
Parent Task
A higher-level task that groups or plans child tasks.
Planning Task
A higher-level work item used for planning, such as initiative or epic.
Status
The current stage of a task, such as Backlogs, To Do, In Progress, or Done.
Task Type
The kind of work item. Examples include initiative, epic, story, bug, and task.
Transition
An allowed movement from one status to another.
Workflow Space
The workspace scope where boards, projects, statuses, task types, and workflows are configured.

How The Pieces Fit Together

A workspace contains projects. A project contains boards and areas. A board shows tasks. Tasks use task types, statuses, assignees, and workflow rules.
