Understand Task Types and Hierarchy
Use task types and parent-child links to organize work without duplicating data.
Task hierarchy helps teams connect planning work to execution work. For example, an initiative can contain epics, and an epic can contain stories or defects, depending on the workspace setup.
Task Types
Task types define the level and behavior of work. Use planning task types for high-level work and executable task types for work the team directly completes.
Parent And Child Tasks
A task can have one parent. A parent can have many children when the hierarchy allows it. The same relationship should be visible from both sides.
Add A Parent
Use the parent search field to find a valid parent task by task code or title. The search should only show task types that are allowed as parents.
Add A Child
Use Add Child to search existing child task instances that match the allowed child task types. Select the task to link it under the parent.
Best practices
- Use hierarchy only when it gives better planning or reporting clarity.
- Do not create parent-child links just to show loose relationships.
- Keep hierarchy rules configured by task type, not by hardcoded task names.
Common mistakes
- Using duplicate task type codes that make hierarchy rules unclear.
- Expecting a task to have multiple parents.
- Adding child tasks that are not allowed by the task type hierarchy.
